As both a licensed clinical pediatric psychologist and a mom of three, I understand how deeply we want to see our children thrive and grow strong and confident. But when everyday hurdles are layered with complex medical needs, anxiety, or mood concerns, even small tasks can feel overwhelming—for them and for you.
Summer often gives families a break from the toughest struggles. You may have thought “They seem better. I haven’t heard those complaints in a while.” But as routines, academic and athletic demands, and new social challenges return, those familiar symptoms may resurface - anxious nights, stomachaches and headaches, and avoidance of important events. These struggles aren’t a sign your child is slipping backwards—they’re a reminder that the underlying stressors were simply quieter during summer’s ease and their tool box isn’t fully equipped to manage their return.
Those with medical challenges may experience additional difficulties with managing their condition with the added stress of the school year. Managing medical needs - upcoming procedures, medication routines, new diagnoses, explaining their condition to peers or feeling different - adds even more layers to everyday hurdles. This is where I come in.
